Judy Chicago was born in 1939 in Chicago and studied art at the University of California in Los Angeles.  In graduate school she began exploring female imagery in her paintings.  Although she was shunned by the art world, she was determined to bring female themes and images to the art world which was dominated by male artists.  In the early 1970’s she produced a series of flower paintings, perhaps inspired by Georgia O’Keefe, symbolizing the female sexual organs.
